Poem-3 Halagali Bedaru in English

 Poem- 3

ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು

(ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಕವಿತೆ-Entire poem)

What kind of a time have we come across these angry people (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) who could never touch their aim in life. The company sent the order from abroad to force all the people and to take away their weapons from them. Halagali in the Mudola samsthana and the nearby places also British established their rule. Hanuma, Bala, Jadaga and Rama(ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) set a trap against the British on hearing the orders from the company.

We should not give the weapons from our hands no matter what the circumstances are, we four are there with you people. If we give away our weapons then we all will die. Do you know that. Start the fight against the British, our help will always be there with you people.

Without the British getting to know, all the people of Halagali gave promises to the hunters of Halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) against the British. Meanwhile, one British clerk (ಕಾರಕೂನ) comes and tells the hunters of Halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) that the British have ordered him to take their weapon away from them anyhow. Hunters of halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) get very angry and give the clerk (ಕಾರಕೂನ) one tight slap, he falls down, The clerk (ಕಾರಕೂನ) goes straight to the authority and complaints.

The authority gets so angry that he bites his own hand in anger and gives an order to the British soldiers to go and attack Halagali immediately. The soldiers immediately jump on their horses and come all the way to Halagali for the attack. Hearing this the hunters of Halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) also get ready for the attack. They shoot the bullet from the gun in such a way as if there is a flash of lightning striking the earth during the monsoon. Seeing this the British soldiers get very shocked and scared and start hiding. They then write to the authority in a letter saying that they alone cannot defeat and kill the hunters of Halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) and request for more soldiers. As soon as the letter reaches the authority a completely prepared army arrives at Halagali very quickly.

Heartlessly the British soldiers brutally killed many people, The Anglo-Indian police were also helpless in front of them. Now in the painful moment under a big tree in the town, Henry Hebalak, named British authority comes and says his intelligent talk - “Give away your weapons, follow the British order, simply don’t die”. Hanuma comes forward and tells the British authority that they don’t trust his words.

Jadaga tells the people not to trust on his words and to continue the fight. He also says that these British people are not made to be trusted so they don't trust him. Jadaga takes out his gun and shoots Hebalak. Hebalak dies immediately. Hearing this the ‘Karasahiba’ gets very angry and orders the soldiers to go and rob Halagali. When the soldiers arrived the hunters of Halagali (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) started shooting at the soldiers. Hanuma asked the people not to show any mercy on these cruel British and shoot them. Hanuma was fighting so bravely that he could kill even 300 British soldiers even if they came over him at once. All of them (ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು) were fighting very bravely. Bala killed the soldiers sitting on the horses - around 10 to 20 of them. Even Rama killed many soldiers. But by now the entire Halgali was in blood. Even though they(the British) gave them so much pain they continued fighting very bravely and fighting all four (Hanuma, Bala, Jadaga, and Rama) of them died.

Weapons, curd, butter, milk, salt, oil, turmeric, cumin, rice, sugar, jaggery, plates, glasses, mangalsutra, mixers everything was stolen. Everything they found they took it and went from Halagali, firing the entire Halagali. As soon as they fired Halagali, Halagali was completely destroyed. Not even a sesame seed size percentage was left to identify that this was Halagali once. This is only as much as I have heard that I told you (the Lavani singer). I told this entire story or incident only with the help of my god Kurta-Koti-Kalamesha.
